Altro floors the UK at World Exhibition (Milan Expo 2015)

Milan Expo 2015 is a non-commercial world exhibition taking place across a vast site with the overarching theme of 'Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life'. Open from 1 May until 31 October 2015, the UK is joining countries from around the world with a stand-out Pavilion inspired by a bee hive to address the global challenges of nutrition and sustainability for our planet.

Renowned architecture practice BDP selected Altro as the sole flooring provider for the UK Pavilion.  All Altro products were installed using the range of Altro adhesives. Altro worked with Stage One, the UK Pavilion manufacturers, to deliver the products to the Expo site in Milan on time and in the correct amounts.

Altro Whiterock and Altro Stronghold 30 were selected for the UK Pavilion kitchen, which is being used by Royal Warrant holders Mosimann’s offering a rich menu showcasing the best of British food and drink. Altro Stronghold 30 is a 3mm thick flooring which is ideal for industrial kitchens. Altro Stronghold 30 achieves Altro's highest rating for slip resistance (PTV≥55, R12). It is designed to minimise risk in environments that often have spills of liquids such as water, oil and other fats. Altro Stronghold 30 has a lifetime slip resistance of 20 years, keeping your risk of a slip or fall to one in a million.

Combined with Altro Whiterock, the complete system creates a seamless, hygienic solution for busy commercial kitchens that is HACCP-approved and is ideal for the requirements of the UK Pavilion.

For the main entrance and seating areas, AltroScreed Quartz Boutique was installed to reflect the white gravel on the outside areas of the UK Pavilion. This resin flooring provides a high-strength floor ideally suited for busy public areas; the UK pavilion is expecting to welcome over one million visitors during Milan Expo 2015. Inspired by the beauty of gemstones, it packs a punch for colour opportunities.

For the storage areas, a bespoke yellow was created of Altro Suprema safety flooring, to reflect the beehive theme of the UK Pavilion. With 40 shades, Altro Suprema provides a designer feel in safety flooring. It has been developed in consultation with colour consultants, architects and end users to reflect design requirements and interior trends. It has Altro Easyclean Maxis PUR Technology for ease of cleaning.

Altro Walkway steps in

When Mann Flooring was called in to replace the flooring on the stairs of Woodhill Primary School, they expected the job to be straightforward. When they removed the existing nosing, it removed 99 per cent of the floor tread. After levelling the floor, Mann Flooring installed Altro Walkway 20. They had used Altro Walkway in the past and found it provided good results, being easy to cove and weld in tricky areas, including stairs.

Kate Jarrett, School Projects and Operations Leader, Woodhill School said: “We were really impressed with Mann Flooring’s work and how they kept us updated with their progress and any difficulties they were encountering along the way. They have done an excellent quality installation and the product itself looks really smart and is wearing well.”

Altro Walkway 20 is our hugely popular, hard-wearing 2mm safety flooring which provides lifelong slip and abrasion resistance.

The range has 42 colours, featuring bright and subtle, sparkle-free designs, and decorative chipped options which give you enhanced design flexibility. It achieves PTV≥ 36 on the pendulum test giving sustained slip resistance throughout the lifetime of the product. It also includes PUR cleanability, superior chemical and stain resistance.

Recofloor Drop-off Site Users

Recofloor’s Drop-off Site User of the Year Award Winners

Recofloor not only values direct members to the scheme, but also those flooring contractors who drop off flooring at one of the distributor sites. Three flooring contractors were recognised at the annual 2015 Recofloor Awards for using their local drop-off points frequently and in an efficient and environmentally-friendly manner.

Drop-off Site User of the Year Awards were presented to Eden Flooring & Interiors, Cornwall; Fantasy Flooring, Bristol and Westlinks, Hull, who had been nominated by their distributors for consistently returning clean, good quality waste vinyl suitable for recycling.

Eden Flooring & Interiors uses Fitwell Flooring in Redruth; Fantasy Flooring uses the drop-off site at 3D Flooring in Cardiff and Westlinks uses Birch Distribution in Hull.

Leading flooring manufacturers Polyflor and Altro founded Recofloor, the UK’s award-winning national vinyl flooring recycling scheme, in 2009 to divert waste vinyl flooring from landfill. More than 2,400 tonnes has already been recycled.

With over 60 drop-off sites located across the UK and Ireland, Recofloor continues to grow and offers flooring companies and contractors a convenient and cost-effective route to recycle their waste vinyl flooring that helps them save significantly on disposal costs.

Highly-valued by Recofloor collectors, the drop-off site service enables flooring firms to deposit their waste vinyl in specific collection areas when they pick up new flooring for their next project. This enables the capture for recycling of relatively small volumes of material from wider geographical areas, material that would otherwise be landfilled.

Covering the whole of Cornwall, Truro-based Eden Flooring & Interiors is a shining example of how commitment and effort can really make Recofloor succeed in a largely rural region. Off-cuts collected by the fitters are stored at their premises and then delivered back to Fitwell Flooring by the vanload.

Trading for more than 30 years in Bristol, Fantasy Flooring has earned a solid track record within the public and private sectors for its high flooring standards and attention to recycling wherever possible. Participating in the Recofloor scheme has enabled it to recycle everincreasing volumes of flooring materials.

Westlinks Services has been nominated two years running for the Drop-off Site User Award, being Highly Commended in the category in 2014.

Working closely with large and small contractors within public and private partnerships, it supplies a wide range of flooring for its customers in construction, property development, design and facilities management.

Testimonials

Nathan Campling, Director of Eden Flooring and Interiors: “The Recofloor service is very convenient for us, especially for contractors who want to drop off small amounts of flooring and it all helps to save money.”

Dennis Perham, Manager of Fitwell Flooring: “Eden Flooring stood out above the others for their recycling efforts; they promote the scheme well and send us the most material. Their fitters keep the Recofloor bags in their vans, so they’re always prepared.”

Mark Purnell, Director of Fantasy Flooring: “The drop-off site at 3D Flooring in Cardiff is convenient for us – and it’s free. We’re saving around £250 a month on disposal costs - and helping to save the environment by recycling waste vinyl that can be readily reused in new products. Winning a Recofloor Award – our first – has raised awareness of our company.”

Kevin Richardson, Sales Representative at 3D Flooring: “Fantasy Flooring does a very efficient job in returning waste vinyl to us; much of it from social housing contracts. These days, many companies are asking about green credentials and demonstrating that you can recycle the waste vinyl flooring helps to win business. There’s much greater awareness and I envisage more and more contractors will become involved as it’s a big thing now.

Wayne Ede, Managing Director of Westlinks: “We are proud to be associated with Recofloor and we actively recycle all our waste vinyl flooring, reducing the impact on the environment.

We are also saving on our disposal costs, a major factor with any business. We will continue with this policy and endeavour to return 100% good quality waste vinyl for eventual use in new products.”

Patrick Pearson, Birch Distribution Hull Branch Manager: “Westlinks were among our first collectors to drop off vinyl every day and in larger quantities. As it’s always of good quality and they’re familiar with our procedures, everything works smoothly.”

Carla Eslava, Recofloor Project Officer: “Drop-off sites are a vital element of our recycling activities, so we’re delighted with how flooring companies are making the most of these facilities and the benefits they offer.”
