Altro work with EPSRC for sustainable growth

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the UK's main agency for funding research in engineering and the physical sciences. EPSRC invests around £800 million a year in research and postgraduate training, to help the nation handle the next generation of technological change.   The EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Industrial Sustainability recently published its annual report on research findings to support sustainable growth in industry.

Driven by a continuous improvement spirit, Altro have notable achievements in waste recycling and process improvements. Over the past year, Altro have taken part in two Cambridge University doctoral research projects through the EPSRC to identify and implement more energy and resource efficiency improvements.

The first research project was about energy and resource efficiency assessment. The project focused on using the Capability Assessment Grid for Eco-Efficiency (CAGE) to help Altro look at existing manufacturing practices through this environmental assessment tool. The tool was designed to facilitate a transition to a more resilient manufacturing system.

The second research project Altro participated in was about assessing and reducing economic and environmental impacts of Product Changeover Operations.  The project looked at ways to reduce the environmental and economic impacts associated with product changeovers and made recommendations for management and system design.
