When looks count in wet environments

In the places people call home, whether permanent or temporary, a comfortable, welcoming and attractive look matters.

In care homes, the bathing experience is an important part of a resident’s routine and plays a role in making that person feel safe and relaxed. Colour is a way of achieving this, creating a warm, comforting and homely environment.

For environments that demand luxury, such as high-end hotels and spas, Altro Whiterock Satins is the ideal choice. Its smooth, high quality look and variety of shade combinations create the look that visitors would expect: a real wow factor.

Altro Pisces then completes the look, with the reassurance that users are safer from the risk of slipping. It has a soft-look finish that is more homely than traditional safety flooring.

We can recommend colour combinations for both safety flooring and Altro Whiterock hygienic wall sheets that are appropriate for people with dementia and achieve the right Light Reflectance Value differences to meet legal requirements.

Minimise downtime and closure of wards

Wall protection systems are designed to minimise the risk of damage caused by bumps, scratches, marks and dints from wheelchairs, beds and trolleys. Puncture holes and deep gouges into the walls require regular filling, sanding and painting. The repair process can take four days or more, often requiring the whole wall to be re-painted, causing much disruption to patient care.

The reason many hospitals put off refurbishments is they had not found any solution to avoid lengthy shut downs. An Altro wall solution has proven to be one to two days quicker than any other refurbishment process they have considered.

Why install Altro Whiterock?

  • Extensive stock from a UK manufacturer

  • Tested to BS EN438-2-1991 and Charpy ISO 179

  • 2.5mm high-grade uPVC

  • Consistent product quality for UV stability, colour consistency and chemical resistance

  • Altro Whiterock, when installed correctly, has an industry-leading, 20-year guarantee. As we developed wall cladding over 30 years ago, we know our guarantees are guaranteed

Win a trip to Bauhausfest with Altro

Altro is celebrating aspirational design and innovative use of its flooring and walling products with a unique photography competition. The prize is an all-inclusive trip to the internationally-renowned Bauhausfest (31 August – 2 September 2018) in Dessau, Germany.

Entrants are invited to submit images featuring current Altro products taken anywhere in the world over the last five years. Images should show how Altro products complement and enrich architecture – a celebration of the possibilities of design. The winning image will be decided by an online public vote.

Altro has long been inspired by The Bauhaus. This connection was strengthened further when leading German flooring company Debolon joined the Altro Group two years ago: Altro Debolon is based in Dessau, the centre of the Bauhaus movement.

“We have a strong sense of what we value and a way of thinking inspired by The Bauhaus – a balance of quality, form and design-led function,” explains Sarah de los Rios Commercial and Marketing Director at Altro. “This approach puts people’s needs at the heart of everything we do. It’s a human-centred approach to designing for the demands of 21st century life.”

Photographs can be submitted from 3 to 24 April 2018. Voting opens on 26 April 2018 and closes 17 May, 2018. Visit our page to find out more.

Are you confident your wall sheets are fire resistant?

Photo of commercial kitchen with Altro Whiterock White on the walls and Altro Stronghold 30 on the floorIn 2016/17 there were 261 fire-related fatalities and approximately 7,100 non-fatal casualties in fires in the UK at non-residential dwellings.¹

Selection of wall sheets and systems is a vital decision when designing or refurbishing a building for both safety and aesthetic purposes. Internal wall linings are a critical factor in the spread of fire and it gaining hold and consideration must be given to the fire rating and resistance to fire of any product being considered for specification. This is of particular importance in circulation areas where it can prevent escape.

However, the fire rating of wall lining material can be overlooked, and whilst you might assume the sheets you have chosen, or are installing, would perform to the highest standards, should the worst happen it’s not always the case. Consideration should be given as to how it will react with other parts of the wall construction, since the substrate and adhesive can have an effect on the overall fire rating of the system.

The Regulations

As stipulated in the Approved Document B of the Building Regulations² you must ensure the fire resistance of your wall covering meets the required level for the environment into which it is installed.

The fire rating for wall linings varies by area of the building. However, in order to be used in public areas and circulation spaces wall linings need to achieve the following ratings to ensure they are safe and compliant:

  • EN 13501 Class B-s3 d0
  • BS 476 Part 7 Class 1 and BS 476 Part 6 Class 0

The Solution

The Altro Whiterock system has been designed to give you confidence and peace of mind with a Class 0 fire rating when used as described in the installation guide. Our systems can be trusted to do the job in high risk areas such as commercial kitchens as well as general use areas.

Check!

Sometimes fire tests are not aligned with the wall system you are buying. To be confident, carry out the following measures ensuring the fire certificate:

  • Relates to the wall system you are about to purchase and install. Is it the same system and the same thickness as specified in the fire certificate?
  • Has the test been conducted as per your installation method?
  • Is the fire certificate for sheet only? Don’t get caught out as having the wrong adhesive or no adhesive at all can invalidate your fire certificate.
  • Is the recommendation for adhesive quantities in the installation guide aligned with the fire certificate?
  • Is the substrate on which the wall lining is to be applied of equal or greater fire rating to that used to test the product? If not, you could be in trouble again.

With Altro you can rest assured that our wall systems are fully compliant and our Technical Services team can provide you with guidance if you have any form of doubt.
