Altro Officially Launch Nationwide Floor Laying Apprenticeship Programme

Monday 13 February 2012

Altro officially launched the first nationwide Floor Laying Apprenticeship programme last week. The programme which delivers Apprenticeships across England, has its own Technical Centre based in Newton Abbot, Devon.

Pat Thomas, Technical Trainer from Altro visited the Technical Centre on Thursday 9th February to officially launch it alongside Altro's Business Development Consultant, Paul George and Katie Court, National Training Coordinator for the Apprenticeship programme.

Pat said of The Technical Centre and working in partnership with the Apprenticeship programme:

"We're delighted to be working with such keen young people who have a genuine interest and desire to work in the flooring trade. By offering our expertise and support to the programme, we know that we are equipping the next generation of floor layers and carpet fitters with the knowledge and technical abilities they need to succeed."

As well as the launch of the first nationwide Floor Laying Apprenticeship programme, last week also marked the fifth National Apprenticeship Week, when across the country, employers, individuals, parents, guardians and teachers were encouraged to think about Apprenticeships and how they can benefit both the individual and business.

Fiona Parsons, Employer Account Manager in Devon for the National Apprenticeship Service says:

"National Apprenticeship Week provides us with a great opportunity to remind everyone of the great progress that we have made with Apprenticeships. The explosion in numbers – over 443,000 started in 2010, up from 280,000 the year before is now a major route into work based training and onto sustainable employment for under 24s as well as progression into higher learning. Apprenticeships have changed over the past few years. Not only are there twice as many, they have grown fastest in the service sector rather than traditional skills. The range of occupations today is diverse and Apprenticeships like the Flooring Guild framework now match this."

The Floor Laying Apprenticeship programme is a nationwide programme, delivered by highly experienced trainers and assessors to deliver training to the next generation of floor fitters and carpet layers. A pilot scheme of the programme was started just over a year ago and in that time over forty Apprentices have been recruited. Due to overwhelming demand more cohorts are due to start over the coming months.

The programme is a blend of on-site and off-site training. Approximately every ten weeks, the Apprentices spend a week at the Technical Centre. During this week they receive technical talks and presentations from industry specialists, and practice and hone their newly found skills in specifically built training booths where their work is closely monitored, assessed and graded.

The Government have recently announced a new wage incentive grant to encourage the self-employed, and small and medium sized businesses, to take on an Apprentice. The grant, worth £1500, is available for all Apprenticeship programmes, including Floor Laying; to find out more please contact Katie Court on 0845 308 1400.
